D’Andrea Golf Course Review

D’Andrea is currently closed due to financial issues

Built in 2000, D’Andrea is an 18 hole public golf course situated in the easterly hills overlooking the Reno/Spark Valley.  The course is a curious combination of beautifully and ill-conceived holes that weave through a developed and undeveloped housing community.  The varying winds and course conditions at D’Andrea make the course either an enjoyable or frustrating golf experience.

Practice Area

D’Andrea offers an expansive elevated south-east facing matted and grass driving range.  Open to the cross winds the range is located in a bowl and lacks solid targets to aim at.

A large putting and chipping green are found next to the driving range.  Conditions are fairly representational of conditions found on the course and both greens can accommodate multiple golfers.

The Course

A curious combination of beautifully and ill-conceived holes that weave through a developed and undeveloped housing community, D’Andrea Golf Club is the course with the most confused identity in the Reno/Sparks area.  Working its way up and down a cut out in the hills, the course can be Continue reading

Wolf Run Golf Club Review

Former home of the University of Nevada Wolf Pack golf team, Wolf Run offers one of the more tempting layouts in the Reno/Sparks Valley area. The course presents a balance of all or nothing Par 4′s, finesse driven Par 3′s, and potentially low scoring Par 5′s.   Though always a challenge, unfortunately Wolf Run is seldom worth paying full price for as the course can be hit or miss golfing experience.

Lakeridge Golf Course Review

Tucked in the hills on the west side of Reno, Nevada is Lakeridge Golf Course, a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design.   The course offers golfers a short, but challenging layout that weaves through the surrounding housing development and includes the best scenic viewpoint of the surrounding area…the Par 3 15th hole.  Consistently the best course for playing conditions in the entire valley, Lakeridge a must play for visitors or residents of the Reno/Sparks area.

Practice Area

Lakeridge has an open easterly facing driving range that allows the golfer to hit into a slight up slop.  Open to the elements, which includes a mostly helping wind, the range allows for both matted and grass practicing.  Though nothing exceptional, the range provides ample space for practicing with accurate ranges.

Two putting and chipping greens are available to all patrons around the first tee and ninth green, providing adequate space for practice or warmups.  The practice greens are fairly representational of the conditions on the course with comparative green speeds.

Tucked in the hills on the west side of Reno is Lakeside Golf Course, offering one of the more compelling balance of challenging golf holes and vista viewpoints in the Reno/Sparks Valley. The front nine holes meanders Continue reading

Washoe Golf Course Review

Situated on the west side of Reno and overlooking the Reno/Spark area Washoe Golf Course offers one of the best value golf experiences in the Northern Nevada region.  The nearly 100 year-old course is simplistic enough for the novice/average golfer and challenging enough for the advanced golfer to enjoy.  The small well kept greens tend to be some of the quickest in the Reno/Sparks area, which can make even the most basically designed holes interesting.

Putting Green

Practice Area

Washoe Golf Course has a slightly elevated all mat driving range which faces in a northerly direction.   While somewhat open with a plethora of targets for aiming, the range’s limited depth of 240-310 yards restricts club usage for longer hitters.  The range is partially shaded allowing for a cooler practice or warm-up area during the summer months.

An expansive putting green is located on the south side of the clubhouse.  The green is representative of conditions found on the course, can accommodate multiple golfers, and is  solid for extended putting and chipping practice.

Wildcreek Golf Course Review

Wildcreek Golf Course with downtown Reno in the distance

Wildcreek Golf Course is an 18 hole public course operated by the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (a 9 hole executive course is also located on site). The course is an eclectic expression of grassy, river, and mountain/desert municipal style courses.  The diversity of the course offers, at times, an aesthetically appealing and challenging design, making it understandable why Wildcreek was the host of three Senior PGA tournaments.  However, time and financial hardships have reduced the overall quality of the course from a professional tour stop to that of your average municipal track.

Driving Range

Practice Area

The open and expansive all grass driving range has two levels to hit from, accommodating a large number of golfers.  North facing the range is lacking accurate yardage markers, but has numerous distance targets for practicing.   The hitting area is level, grass quality is good, and they are mats present for the wetter months.

The putting green, located between the clubhouse and the range, is large and offers multiple undulations that are more severe than the conditions found on the course.  A chipping green is locate adjacent to the putting green, along with a bunker and is large enough to accommodate up to 3 golfers at one time.

Rosewood Lakes Golf Course Review

Rosewood Lakes is cut into the area's natural wetlands

The city of Reno’s Rosewood Lakes Golf Course is a 18 hole links style course located near the city’s airport.  Abound with natural wetlands and water hazards, the course presents a quirky and unusual challenge.   Constant winds, obscured landing areas , and narrow fairways make Rosewood one of the  more confounding courses in the Reno area.  Additionally, odd operating hours and a staff which mimics the course’s quirky design unfortunately contribute to making Rosewood Lakes an unpredictable and unfulfilling golf experience.

Practicing Area

The all grass driving range at Rosewood Lakes faces a westerly direction and parallels the road adjoining the course.  Lacking visual appeal, the range is deficient in grass growth, but does have good yardage markers.  Aside from its appearance, the constant winds that blow from varying directions make Rosewood’s range ideal for wind practice, but not necessarily swing practice.

Located next to Pro Shop the putting green is large enough to accommodate multiple golfers.  Although not necessarily representational of the slopes found on the course, the putting green offers a solid area to work on ones short game.

The Course

Being a water hazard laden links course in the middle of Reno’s high desert makes Rosewood Lakes one of Continue reading
