Opened in 1990, Mountain Springs Golf and Country Club is 18 hole public golf course located just outside of Sonora in California’s Gold Country. Weaving through the area’s golden hills, the course offers a creative concept and open design that demands golfers to make a plethora of accurate as well as blind shots. Unfortunately playing conditions can be hit or miss making Mountain Springs anything but a destination course and one only mildly worthy of a stop for those passing through the area.

Practice Area

Driving Range
Mountain Spring’s easterly facing matted driving range is situated on the top of the main hill overlooking the course.  Less than 300 yards in depth with a dramatic fall off to the landing area, the range is adequate for warming up but far from ideal for extended practice sessions (particularly when working on distances).

Putting Green
Two medium-sized putting greens are located between the Clubhouse and Pro Shop.  The greens can accommodate multiple golfers, are good for extended practice sessions, but aren’t necessarily representational of the slop changes found on the course.

Weaving through the hills of California’s Gold Country, Mountain Springs offers a creative concept and open design that demands golfers to make a plethora of accurate as well as blind shots.  The course is harmlessly enticing, tempting aggressive play when conservatism is usually the prudent play. Still most of Mountain Springs is aesthetically unappealing and the multitude of blind tee shots leave golfers to stare at the course’s eye sores and open spaces.  It can perhaps be best summed up as an intriguing play, yet nothing one should drive out of there way to interact with in the future.

12th Hole

Tee boxes & Fairways
Over time the tee boxes have become uneven and at any given time half of the boxes have burnt out grass.  Play from the fairways can be less than ideal with varying conditions of dry to soggy depending on the weather and season.  Bunkers are in a deteriorating yet decent state.

The Greens
The prime attention of the course’s maintenance seems to be given to the greens which are kept at a medium speed and tend to roll true…which is the minimum that anyone should ask from public course.

Hazards & Etc.
Though water comes into play on 10 of  Mountain Springs holes, the majority of hazards on the course are benign.  The low cut rough ensures that only the native areas make errant shots difficult to find.

Playing Time
The design and layout of the course as well as the slightest of delays can lead varying playing times for 18 holes.  Anticipate rounds of 3.5-5+ hours.

Patrons
A mixture of mostly locals and a few travelers patronize the course running the gamete of skill levels.

To Walk or Ride
Constant elevation change and the fact that golfers must climb the highest point of the course twice makes carts the preferred mode of transportation except for those who enjoy a decent hike while playing.

Staff, Amenities, Etc.

The staff at Mountain Spring is largely professional and friendly and the Pro Shop is stock to handle your basic golf equipment needs along with a solid selection of gear.

A full service restaurant and bar is located in the clubhouse, including side door access to the bar for those seeking to refuel between nines.

Beverage cart service is available during times of high traffic.

Located in central Wyoming and built in 1997, the Links Course is the newest addition of Caper GC’s 27 holes golf complex.  Misleadingly labeled “Links” nearly half the holes have minimal links characteristics and significant elevation changes making the layout more of a highland or hill style.  The course also contains two of the most ill-conceived holes ever played, diminishing the overall experience of the Links Course and making it the least compelling of the layouts found at Casper GC.

Practice Area

Driving Range
Casper offers a three tiered mostly all grass driving range with a maximum range of just over 300 yards.  Since the range faces into the prevailing wind practice or warm-up sessions consistently have to deal with the area’s disruptive winds.  Nonetheless the range has good targets for aiming and antelope are often found wandering through the range.

Putting Green
A moderately sized putting green is located on the north side of the clubhouse and is able to accommodate multiple golfers.  The green conditions are fairly representational of conditions found on the course, but less than ideal for extended practice sessions.

The Course

Design & Layout
The newest addition to the City of Casper’s main golf course, the Links Course is an ill-named, ill-conceived, and least compelling addition to what would otherwise be a functional 18 municipal golf course. These nine holes are anything but the advertised “links style” course, with the first four holes designed around the highest point in the course that includes two of the most ill-conceived holes possibly ever encountered in America (2nd and 3rd holes) do mostly to their severe slopes. The remainder of the layout is mostly flat, only mildly achieving any semblance of an American or Scottish style links course.

8th Green

Tee Boxes & Fairways
Both the tee boxes and fairways are generally in good order, though some fairways can show minimally amounts of ware and tear.  The fairways of the 2nd and 3rd holes can particularly be problematic because of having to maintain a problematic design.

The Greens
The newest of the greens found at Casper GC, those on the Links Course have the most slope and undulation. Still each green slopes back towards the front, providing only a moderate challenge and quickness.

Hazards, Etc.
OB or hazards comes into play on every hole on the Links Course, demanding fairly accurate tee shots on each hole in order to escape without penalization.

Patrons
Mid-to-high handicappers tend to be the majority of patrons at Casper GC with at around 90% being regulars.

Playing Times
Playing times will vary depending on course traffic, but typically range between 1.5-2 hours.

To Walk or Ride
The fact that one must climb and descend the highest point of course twice makes this portion of Casper GC cart recommended except for those who appreciate a good hike.

Staff, Amenities, Etc.

The staff at Casper is cordial and professional, with a Pro Shop that is stocked to handle any last minute golfing accessory and equipment needs.

The clubhouse has a indoor restaurant/grill that goes by the name Caddieshack/19th Hole. The food menu is typical of most golf courses and there is a decent selection of beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages as well.

Beverage cart service is available at Casper during times of high traffic and there are water jugs located at multiple spots on the course.

Course Tips

Hole #1- This visually imposing open hole actually has a relatively easy tee shot.  Dial back off the tee and find the left center of the fairway for a 150 yard approach shot to an subtlety undulating green that can be hard to find when hitting into a head wind.

Hole #2- The first of the Links Course’s ill-conceived holes, this short downhill Par 4 tempts golfers to go for the green or lay back off the tee.  With trouble surrounding the green and a 45 degree-ish slope on the narrow fairway neither prospect is good.  If laying up hit your tee shot on the left side of the fairway and pray it finds a green patch.  Green slopes towards front right.

Hole #3-  Again the green is a tempting target off the tee, but the hole is best played for a comfortable approach shot from the right/center of the fairway.  No matter what, golfers will be hitting into the narrow of an elevated green that slopes back to the fairway.

Hole #4- The hazard dividing the fairway on this open Par 5 is roughly 160 yards from the green which means most golfers can grip it and rip it off the tee.  Play for two shots without wind and three shot into a head wind into a slightly elevated green that slopes back towards the right.

Hole #5- Arguably the most difficult hole on the Links Course, this lengthy Par 3 demands that the golfer not only find the green but remain below the hole in order to score well.

6th Green

Hole #6- Bunkers on the left and center of the fairway might distract some golfers. However, the lack of trouble on this hole to the right should allow most to be aggressive off the tee.  Approaches to the green can be somewhat tight and again it is best to be short of the hole.

Hole #7- All the danger on the second Par 5 of the Links Course is on the left side of the fairway, so be aggressive to the right.  Approach is subtlety downhill to the narrow of a green that is protected by water on the left and elevated mounds on the right.  Being short is a good thing here.

Hole #8- Aggressiveness rarely pays off the tee on this short Par 4. Best to lay back to play for a 50-100 yard approach shot to a green that feeds severely to the middle left.

Hole #9- The finishing hole is all about finding the right distance off the tee. Missing long, left, or right will challenge even the best of golfers to walk away with an even score.  Find the green, be below the hole, and walk away with par or better.

Combining views of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains, Glendale is one of the more low key and enjoyable golfing experiences in Salt Lake City. Built in 1973, this 18 hole public course offers large wonderfully maintained greens with lake and wetland lined fairways that attract an abundance of waterfowl. Flat and forgiving, Glendale’s difficultly is typically elevated by the direction and severity of the wind making some of the easiest of holes the most difficult.

Driving Range
Glendale offers an expansive all grass north facing driving range that is nearly 350 yards in depth and surrounded by netting.  With multiple aiming targets, the range is ideal for warmups or extended practice sessions.  Arguably the best range in the SLC system.

Putting Greens
There are two large putting greens at Glendale located on each side of the clubhouse.  Typically only one green is open at a time, but each is representative of the conditions found on the course and can accommodate multiple golfers.  The greens are also solid for chipping practice sessions.

The Course

Design & Layout
Set in Salt Lake City’s westside commercial business district, Glendale’s layout is as straight forward and unintimidating as they come with only a smattering of hazards and natural obstacles. Lightly lined with matured trees, the course does offer a few holes that demand accuracy on every shot. Overall, it’s very forgiving allowing for a plethora of scoring opportunities that are only limited by unfavorable high winds from either the NW or SW part of the valley.

Tee boxes, Fairways, & Rough
By and large the tee boxes are level and in good conditions. Only poor weather conditions infringe of what are typically well kept and manicured fairways.  The rough is kept to a minimum, but there are pockets of high natural grass that have been allowed to grow.

The Greens
The real draw of Glendale is the course’s greens which are the best in the SLC system and arguably the most consistent in the Salt Lake Valley. The raised greens are all simplistically sloped back towards the fairway with only few offering challenging slopes or multiple levels. As long as the greens are tended to by superintendent Bryan Witzel golfers can count on their putts rolling true.

Hazards & Etc.
10 of the 18 holes at Glendale penalize only the most errant or ill-advised golf shots with a hazard.  For the most part the course’s open layout is accommodating of errors and allows for scoring chances on nearly every hole.

Playing Time
Typically rounds can be completed in 3.5-4.5 hours with longer playing times being the exception not the rule.

Patrons
Most patrons of Glendale are mid-to-high handicappers, though at any given time there is a pleasant mixture of all skill set levels of the game.

To Walk or Ride
Being flat Glendale is as walker friendly of a course there is and the course hosts a large walking population of golfers.   Carts are available and tend to accelerate playing times when there is minimal traffic on the course.

Staff, Amenities, etc.

The staff at Glendale is cordial and professional.  The Pro Shop is stocked to handle any last minute golfing accessory and equipment needs.

The clubhouse has a grill with indoor/outdoor seating. The food menu is typical of any golf course (average quality food) and there is a decent selection of beer and non-alcoholic beverages as well (hard liquor is not available).

Beverage cart service is available at Glendale during times of high traffic and there are water fountains located on the front and back nines of the course.

Course Tips

Hole #1- A wide straight away par 5 the opening hole asks only that the golfer avoid the hazard on the right and driving range on the left.  Finding the fairway with any amount of the distance off the tee sets up the opportunity to reach the green in two.  Miss short and right on approach to ensure an solid opportunity for making birdie.

Hole #2- A 45 degree dogleg right will tempt longer hitters to drive for the green off the tee.  However the hole is best played back to the middle of the fairway where an accurate distance approach can be taken to a green that feeds significantly towards the front.  Do not be long.

Hole #3- Arguably both the easiest and most difficult hole on the course, especially when there is a wind blowing this short Par 4 curls around the hazard on the left side.  Though reachable for longer hitters, the risk does not match the reward, making the best play to the right and the most comfortable approach distance.  The green is three tiered feeding back towards the front.  Be aggressive on a front pin position, but conservative when in the middle or back.

Hole #4- Straight forward Par 3. Find the green, be below the hole, and walk away with par or better.

Approach to 5th Hole

Hole #5- A slight dogleg right, the 5th hole requires a semi accurate drive down the right center of the fairway. Be sure to find the middle of the green on your approach as the steep front will lock up balls and anything off the green can make par a challenge.

Hole #6- The Jordan canal along the left side and the angle of the tee box force most golfers to the right side of the fairway.  However, the 6th hole is so forgiving that even the worst of tee shots can still leave golfers with a chance at reaching the green in two.  Just be sure to place your approach below the hole for the best scoring opportunity.

Hole #7- Another open, forgiving, straight away Par 4.  Drive for distance, avoiding the left bunkers and the hidden hazard on the right.  Find the fairway, then find the green and walk away with par or better.   Miss short or right on approach.

Hole #8- Simplistic, yet tricky hole no matter which direction the wind is blowing. Aggressive misses on this Par 3 will leave a testy up and down.  Find the middle of the green and be happy with par.

Hole #9- While the hazard on the right can cause some distress, its the hidden hazard and trees on the left which can hinder reaching this Par 5′s green in two on one of the most scorable holes on the course.  Fairway twists to the right around 140 yards short of the green.  Again it’s best to miss short rather than long on the approach.

Hole #10- Pin position is key off the tee on this short Par 4.  If the pin is short/middle behind the bunker then it is wise to play for a longer approach off the tee.  Otherwise be aggressive and attempt to capitalize.

Hole #11- The longest Par 3 on the course is less of a challenge than it seems.  Aim for the middle of the green and walkaway with par or better.

Hole #12- A slight dogleg left, it’s important not just to find the middle/right of the fairway, but to place your approach shot below a green that is tricky to score on above the hole.

Hole #13- A lengthy Par 5 there is little harm off the tee aside from the canal on the left.  Be aggressive off the tee, on your approach, and walk away with par or better.

Hole #14- A 45 degree dogleg right, the 14th asks that a golfer layup for a 170 yard approach shot from the left or aggressively clear the trees and rough on the right.  No matter what, the hole is best played from the left hand side of the fairway to a green that slopes aggressively in the front back towards the fairway.

15th Green

Hole #15- The second risk/reward hole on the course, tempts longer hitters to attack the green off the tee.  However, with heavy rough left and OB long, the hole is ideally played to the left side of the fairway and an 80+ yard approach shot.

Hole #16- Though the trees on the right can be intimidating, the only real danger on this hole is the hazard on left.  Play aggressively off the tee (missing right) and pay attention to a green that slopes left and towards the Jordan River.

Hole #17-  The 17th plays predominately into the wind which in extreme conditions can make this Par 3 difficult to reach off the tee.  Best to play the hole to the short left or long right as the green opens to these areas.

Hole #18- OB on the left and hazard/a bunker on the right make this finishing hole a challenging dogleg left .  Finding the center/right of the fairway is a must and playing for a below the hole approach shot on an aggressively sloping back to front green is a must.  Par is a good score here.

Putting Greens
There are two small greens at Emerald Lakes located on the east side of the clubhouse, one for putting and the other of chipping/sand practice.  The greens are fairly representational of the conditions on the course and there are a plethora of range balls offered for extended practice sessions.  The sand trap is also fully functional…meaning well groomed with sand present.

Driving Range
An expansive southerly facing driving range located beyond the practice greens.   The facility is mats only, but does offer numerous targets for warm up or extended practice sessions.

Design & Layout
Wedged in between Hwy 99 and a rail line, Emerald Lakes offers a flat, short, and pleasant golfing experience in the southern Sacramento area.  The course has a balance of an open/forgiving and tight/punishing layout with open spaces, water hazards on six holes, and maturing trees.  As with most courses, accuracy is a must to score well, but most hazards are more of a visual than a literal challenge making the course welcoming for golfers on most levels.

Well constructed with decent undulations, the greens at Emerald Lakes tend to role true and be fairly quick for a public course. Minimal usage damage for a high capacity course.

Trees on every hole, water on six holes, and power lines on the 8th hole await the golfer.   Overcoming the visual appearance of these hazards/obstacles is the principle challenge of the course.

Playing times can vary greatly with the amount of traffic on the course, but range from 1.5 to 3 hours for 9 holes.

Patrons tend to be mid-to-high handicappers along with families and beginners.

The flatness and short yardage of the course makes Emerald Lakes extremely walker friendly. Carts are available to those that require or desire them.

Deemed the 29th most difficult golf course in America by Golf Digest, Rochelle Ranch is a sprawling 18 hole public course along Interstate 80 in southern Wyoming.  Weaving through the rocky prairie brush the course challenges golfers to not only conquer its length (nearly 8000 yards from the tips) but also the strong westerly winds that are a constant presence…sometimes reaching 60+ mph.  A unique and memorable experience for anyone living or passing through the area.

Practice Area

Putting Green
Located on the east side of the clubhouse is Rochelle Ranch’s expansive putting green.  Though not typical of the conditions found on the course, the green is ideal for warm-ups and extended practice sessions including short game work.

Driving Range
The large all grass driving range faces in a southerly direction area from the clubhouse.  A short 250 yards in length, the range possesses accurate distance markers, but is completely exposed to the high cross winds that enter from the right side making extended practice sessions a challenge.

The Course 

Design & Layout
Carved out of the desert landscape of south central Wyoming, the sprawling layout at Rochelle Ranch fits the natural contours of the area allowing the area’s high winds and the course’s yardage to present the golfer with one of the great wild challenges on America.  Subtle elevation changes, obscured lines of sight due to the sagebrush, water hazards, and “natural bunkers” penalize any mistake. One forgiving aspect of Rochelle Ranch is the fact that the area’s elevation is roughly 7000 feet, allowing for extended ball flight.

Tee boxes & Fairways
The seasons can complicate playing conditions, but by and large the tee boxes are level and acceptable. The same holds true for the fairways that are a mix between level and slightly slanted lies for lay up and approach shots.

The Greens
Even under the most ideal conditions the greens at Rochelle Ranch can change from hole to hole. Varying speeds and the occasionally dead/burnt spots can make scoring well difficult.  On the best kept green, conditions are above average to good for a public course.

Hazards & Etc.
Though only 10 of the 18 holes at Rochelle Ranch have hazards, every hole welcomes the prospect of errant shots that can be swallowed up by the surrounding prairie. Simply put, finding the fairway and the green stuff is at a premium.

Playing Time
Regulars who are familiar with the course often play Rawlins in as few as 2.5 hours, while first timers might require closer to 4-4.5 hours.  Rarely do playing time exceed 4.5.

Located on the back side of the Teton Mountain Range and just north of Victor, Idaho is Teton Reserve, an 18 hole Hale Irwin designed course. Open to the public, Teton Reserve expansively saunters thru the tall grass of the flat valley floor with a challenging and atheistically appealing design. During the prime season the course’s greens are typically in impeccable condition, making it not only a great golf experience in the Teton/Jackson area, but a exceptional value for a public course.

Practice Area

Driving Range
The 500 yards deep and expansive the all grass driving range is set up in a southerly direction, meaning the golfers will have to deal with head or right to left winds (when present).  There are an adequate number of accurate distance and visual targets making the range excellent for extend practice sessions or short warm ups.

Putting Green and Bunker
A large putting green is located next to the range that can accommodate multiple golfers.  The green is flatter than the conditions found on the course, but is nonetheless representative of the speed. Neighboring the green is a large practice bunker with multiple pins for fine tuning one’s sand game.

The Course

Design & Layout
There are many aspects of Teton Reserve that make the course not only a hidden gem in the Teton Valley, but an exceptional golfing value for those seeking a more professional quality experience. U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin’s design weaves through the natural landscape offering it’s own beauty while not overwhelming the natural beauty of the area. A reasonable mixture of hard pressing and manageable greens keep one engrossed even when a hole’s overall designed isn’t necessarily an original one.

The one negative of Teton Reserve is the current layout where the clubhouse is placed on the course’s fringe and the starting, stopping, and practice areas are a few minute cart ride or lengthy walk away. This can be somewhat confusing for first time visitors, is highly inefficient, and frustrating for those looking for or needing refueling half way through their rounds.  Additionally, the course is completely open to the elements, meaning the there is little reprieve from the southwesterly winds and rains that can be present.

Tee boxes & Fairways
From tee and through the fairways conditions at Teton Reserve are good with level/open tee boxes and subtly sloped fairways that only once in a while provide the golfer with a thin lie.  Bunkers are in solid condition.

The Greens
The greens at Teton Reserve are the highlight of the course offering a smooth, quick, pure, and borderline professional experience.  The slightest of errors will leave putts short and others sliding past the cup.

Hazards & Etc.
Water comes into play on only the 12th hole at Teton Reserve, making the majority of course’s dangers native area hazards or OB.  Overall, the course is fairly forgiving of errant shots.

Playing Time
The expansiveness of the course and the slightest of delays can lead to 4 hours rounds feeling more like 5 hour plus affairs.  That said when using a cart, golfer should expect round of 18 holes to range from 3.5-5 hours.

Patrons
Patrons of the course are a mixture of local valley residents, travelers through the area, and tourists from Jackson who are seeking a value golf experience.  Playing levels consequently run the entire gambit from beginners to low handicappers.

To Walk or Ride
The relative flatness of Teton Reserve’s design makes the course an exceedingly walkable one.  However, the shear distance that golfers have to walk from the clubhouse to the 1st and 10th tee boxes (as well as the practice area) and the distances between greens and tee boxes makes this a cart preferred course.

Staff, Amenities, Etc.

The staff at Teton is largely professional and friendly and the Pro Shop is stock to handle your basic golf equipment needs along with a solid selection of gear.

A full service restaurant and bar is located in the clubhouse, including a small snack bar for fueling up prior to or half way through your round.

At this time there is no beverage cart service at Teton Reserve.

Grand Teton Brewing Company
One’s of America’s great breweries, Grand Teton is located a short drive south of the course in Victor.  Using water sourced from the Teton Mountain’s, the brewery has an array of regular and seasonal selections that will make even the pickiest of palates happy.  Be sure to try any of their Cellar Reserve Series beers, especially if they are available on tap in the pub.  (Click here to visit Grand Teton’s website and here for directions).
