Glendale Golf Course Review

Glendale Golf Course Review Salt Lake City Utah 1852

Combining views of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains, Glendale is one of the more low key and enjoyable golfing experiences in Salt Lake City. Built in 1973, this 18 hole public course offers large wonderfully maintained greens with lake and wetland lined fairways that attract an abundance of waterfowl. Flat and forgiving, Glendale’s difficultly is typically elevated by the direction and severity of the wind making some of the easiest of holes the most difficult.

Driving Range
Glendale offers an expansive all grass north facing driving range that is nearly 350 yards in depth and surrounded by netting.  With multiple aiming targets, the range is ideal for warmups or extended practice sessions.  Arguably the best range in the SLC system.

Putting Greens
There are two large putting greens at Glendale located on each side of the clubhouse.  Typically only one green is open at a time, but each is representative of the conditions found on the course and can accommodate multiple golfers.  The greens are also solid for chipping practice sessions.

Riverbend Golf Course Review

Part of Salt Lake County network of courses, Riverbend Golf Course was built in 1994 and is semi-links style course situated above and along the banks of the Jordan River.  The course is a mixture of illusionary challenging tee shots and undulating greens that tend to run quick.  Best played during the summer and fall months, Riverbend is a pleasant and affordable golf experience in the south end of the Salt Lake Valley.

J.J. Killeen emerges victorious at the 2011 Utah Championship

With his father on the bag, J.J. Killeen won his first Nationwide Tour event

Few things are as great as witnessing two golfers dual during the final round of a tournament for the title of champion.  There is something about the increasing tension, the momentum changes from shot to shot and hole to hole that render the remainder of the field an afterthought.  And as so often happens it is a matter a few key shots and/or a few inches that determines which golfer triumphs over the other.

As I followed the pairing of J.J. Killeen and Jeff Gove during yesterday’s final round of the Nationwide Tour’s Utah Championship at Willow Creek CC this feeling was again reinforced in me and how golf can be so satisfying to the victor and cruelly punishing to the second place finisher.

Entering the final round of the tournament both Killeen and Gove were tied at 16 under par. And while Killeen birdied the opening hole to take an early lead, it was Gove’s 30 foot eagle putt on the 3rd hole which Continue reading

Nationwide Tour Utah Championship Day 2

It could be said that day two of the Nationwide Tour’s Utah Championship was all about the continued excellences of J.J. Killeen who finished 13 under par with a one shot lead (click here for the leaderboard).  And after following Killeen during Round 2 this honestly isn’t far from the truth.  For the second straight day Killeen was on his game and even when mistakes were made his putter saved the day.

However, there were two big movers that seem poised to threaten the Utah Championship’s leader over the weekend.  Jeff Gove (1 shot back) tied Killeen’s 62 from the first round and Darron Stiles shot a bogey free 63 to finish 4 shots off the pace.  Gove finished 4th in this tournament last year and Stiles has had a mildly successful year sitting at 20th on the money list, ahead of Killeen who is currently 25th

As for the groups that I was following yesterday unfortunately Boros, Bixler, and Kim missed the cut, while Flores, Deforest, and, as mentioned, Stiles survived to play this weekend.

The weather looks to be holding strong for Saturday (i.e. minimal chance of thunderstorms), which means warm temperatures and some ideal conditions for continued low scoring.

Here is the photoset from today’s second round. Enjoy! Continue reading

Rose Park Golf Course Review

Opened in 1958 Rose Park Golf Course is an 18 hole municipal course operated by the City of Salt Lake.  Divided by the Jordan river, this parkland style course offers a mixture of straight away and subtle dogleg holes which play into slightly elevated greens.  The majority of the course offers golfers subtle challenges balanced with enticing risk/reward holes.  While not the most interesting of Salt Lake City’s course, Rose Park offers a relaxing low-keyed environment for golfers of all levels with minimal danger from hazard areas.

Driving Range

Practice Area

Facing a southwesterly direction Rose Park’s driving range has the feeling of hitting into an odd shaped farm field, with a back fence line that is uncomfortably close at times (the range varies from around 200 to 315 yards in length).  The all grass hitting surface’s condition varies between average and good, while the lack of accurate yardage markers makes the range less than ideal for practicing.  Wind direction is typically a headwind or blowing from the right side.

A large putting green Continue reading

Nibley Park Golf Course Review

Nibley Park's signature hole the Par 3 9th

Utah’s oldest public golf course Nibley Park is one of three nine hole municipal courses operated by the City of Salt Lake.  Opened in 1922 the parkland style course offers some of the most scenic views of  the Watasch Mountains from its’ treelined fairways.  Even though Nibley Park is lacking in length, it challenges beginners to scratch golfers demanding accurate shots to score well.  The finish hole offers a fantastic view of the mountains and will challenge the moxie of most golfers.

One of Nibley Park's two putting greens

Practice Area

Located adjacent to clubhouse Nibley Park’s driving range is the over 100 yard wide and can accommodate the largest number of golfers of any SLC course.    The all grass range offers a good hitting surface from which to practice from and there is a decent amount of shading from the sun during the morning hours.  At its’ maximum length the range is only 270 yards and thus golfers must use limited Continue reading
