About 2 months ago my wife and I made our first trip to Zion National Park in southern Utah, a place that, in my opinion, trumps the Grand Canyon in natural beauty. Our lodging for the few days we were in the area was the Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort. The mountain style resort, was loaded with outside activities, including a creative and challenging miniature golf course.
The newly build course is rustic and about as aesthetically natural of mini golf course I have ever encountered, striking a balance between mini golf and an actual golfing/putting experience. There aren’t any windmills, gimmicky objects, or flashy colors. Instead the course’s design integrates the rocks/stones of the area into every hole providing natural obstacles for players.
The course demands a strategic approach from the player to score well. The angles and slopes force players to think about their second shot before hitting their first, three water fountains and a waterfall literally play as water hazards (no protective railing), one cannot bounce their “shots” of the unpredictable rocks, and I found it entirely refreshing that there are only a few holes where scoring a one is realistically feasible.
Even though this course is demanding, it retains the key concept of any mini golf course…it’s an infinitely fun challenge. Additionally, how many mini golf courses have you played that provide the player with a putting green to warm up on? Classic!
So if visiting Zion National Park or you’re in the area playing perhaps the 9 hole Thunderbird Golf Course in Mt. Carmel Junction as highlighted by Hooked on Golf, you might want to consider making a short drive to play mini golf course like no other.
